Fast, lightweight hidden electric assistance

How Cytronex WorksCytronex was developed to combine all the fun of cycling with a realistic alternative to using a car for local journeys. So our electric bicycle system needed to be fast without requiring high levels of fitness (although fit cyclists will get to their destinations faster than ever before). Crucially, we found that our third objective of providing 'invisible electric assistance' complemented the first two perfectly, because the resulting lightweight electric bicycle has an unrivalled power to weight ratio.

Other ebikes broadly have two means of control - automatic electric assistance based on a torque sensor or control via a throttle (like a motorbike). We extensively tested both methods and decided not to use either because:

  • A powered bike with a torque sensor is easy to use but the systems cannot predict exactly what assistance the rider wants at any one time, so sometimes you find there is not enough, at other times, too much.
  • Ebike throttles provide full control but are often not convenient to use whilst riding an electric bike. A twist grip throttle needs to be held in position so signaling to turn right or move out is impossible under power. Since riders generally want full power anyway this seemed to us rather pointless - after all, if you need to go slowly, then you don't need any assistance on a lightweight bike anyway. Cytronex powered electric bikes are just the same as unassisted bikes when the power is off. For us - a bicycle should look, feel and ride like a bicycle!

Kalkhoff Aggatu & Pro-Connect, Gazelle, Ezee, Wisper, Ultramotor A2B, Heinzmann, Powacycle, E-motion, Monarch Eco, Bionx, Gitane and Powabyke all use throttles or torque sensor control.

Power Assistance At The Touch Of A Button

ControlsSo Cytronex is very, very simple to use: when your speed drops below maximum assisted speed and you need electric power - just press the Boost button. A red light illuminates and Cytronex will then continue to push all the time your speed is below the maximum assisted speed, until you touch the rear brake or press the Boost button again. So when you need to stop, the power is cut instantly. It's also very easy to switch the electric assistance off when you don't need it. This leaves you to concentrate on the traffic and getting to your destination fast.

So you get power all the time whenever you press the Boost button. The closer the bike speed stays to the maximum assisted speed, the less energy it uses. On steep hills where more torque is required the power is adjusted automatically.

You can use Cytronex to get away from traffic lights fast. Just press the Boost button and start pedaling when the lights change. You will find the electric assistance quickly kicks in and whisks you up to speed. Change gear to keep up and add your own pedal power. This can be very useful in traffic to help keep you out of harms way. Great for stop, start situations like riding in town.

Using your bike without assistance

Cytronex equipped electric bikes are designed to be used with or without assistance. So if you don't take the battery the weight of the Cannondale Capo is only about 11.5Kg and the Super Six is less than 11Kg (less than 9Kg if you swap the front wheel also). Fully equipped with the water bottle battery the Super Six weighs just 12.9Kg - which we believe makes it the lightest full size electric bike in the world!

The freewheel in the Cytronex electric motor means that when the going is easy and you don't need assistance, it is just like cycling any other high specification bicycle.

RECHARGING

Cytronex batteryCytronex is designed for convenience which is why we have one of the fastest recharge times of any electric bike currently available. The battery is removed from the bike after every journey and taken inside for recharging or storage.

So if you are using your Cytronex equipped electric bike to cycle to work, put the battery on to charge in the afternoon at the office and you'll have maximum power when you leave. A round trip of about 12 miles only takes an hour to recharge, a full recharge takes about 80 minutes and is good for around 20 miles of average terrain, so most commuters recharge no more than once per day.

The advantage of being able to fast charge the battery just before you leave is that the battery will still be warm when you get on the bike. This will provide maximum power assistance and acceleration. It should be noted however, that the battery should never be recharged again before it has cooled down.
